KXLY Story: Local organization tackles language barriers at the polls

Knowledge is both powerful as well as empowering. This is why we’ve structured our Women’s Teatimes to feature a variety of guest speakers, teachers, and professionals from the community, including Spokane’s League of Women Voters who taught our Cafecito participants the ins and outs of the U.S.’s voting system.

This was a particularly meaningful opportunity for many participants, who have either never been able to vote or have only voted under insecure, unstable and often dangerous circumstances. After becoming U.S. citizens, many immigrants and refugees express their gratitude to have the opportunity to freely vote and participate as a valued member of society.

Thank you, reporter Maryssa Rillo of KXLY, for capturing this story and sharing about the importance of voting knowledge and documents being available and accessible in a variety of languages.
